The purpose of the Head Custodian is to maintain an attractive, sanitary, safe facility for students, staff, and the public. A head custodian supervises the cleaning and maintenance of a building.

• Follow job related instructions given by the Principal/Custodian Foreman.
• Responsible for overseeing any minor repairs.
• Responsible for devising a plan for the cleaning of each office or room in the building daily, such as dusting, vacuuming, washing windows, waxing floors, and shampooing carpet.
• Maintain a safe atmosphere for students, personnel, and visitors.
• Order materials necessary for the upkeep of the building while staying within the assigned budget.
• Keep the building and premises—including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas—neat and clean at all times.
• After opening each day, check that all exit doors are open and panic bolts are working properly.
• At closing, secure all doors and windows; turn off lights except for security purposes.
• Clean restrooms and drinking fountains daily according to health department regulations.
• Clean classrooms and corridors daily.
• Remove trash and rubbish from campus daily; cut grass weekly and trim shrubbery as needed.
• Care for plants and shrubs inside and outside the building.
• Move furniture and equipment within the building as directed by the Building Manager.
• Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state & federal regulations.
• Engage in professional growth, demonstrate professional ethics and leadership.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Must provide own transportation.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Alabama Driver's License.
• 5 years of relevant work experience required.
• Alternatives to the above qualifications may be considered by the board.
• Private sector employment experience may be considered.
