Located centrally in Birmingham’s Uptown Entertainment District, the BJCC campus includes Legacy Arena, Protective Stadium, BJCC Concert Hall, over 220,000 square feet of meeting & exhibition space, and City Walk BHAM, a 31-acre public outdoor space with a dog park, pickleball courts, skate park and more.
Summary/ObjectiveThe part-time Setup Technician is skilled labor who sets up equipment—chairs, event staging, tables, various flooring, skirting tables, and tablecloths—for all events held in the BJCC arena and other venues. The technician also performs minor repair/maintenance of broken equipment, upkeep, and flooring in the arena.
Technical Expertise and Knowledge- Ability to set up chairs, tables, flooring, equipment, and supplies as instructed for events.
- Cleaning equipment, storage rooms, and tool rooms.
- Transporting equipment using forklift and other machinery as necessary.
- Loading and unloading trucks and other vehicles.
- Cooperative spirit to perform other related duties as required.
- Ability to follow verbal and written communications regarding setup needs and to distribute information to appropriate internal and external departments.
- Effective listening, speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills in a professional setting.
- Document and maintain records of repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Positive working relationships with event managers, promoters, exhibitors, patrons, and other internal customers to deliver seamless service.
Moderate to extensive stress level associated with crowds of public visitors. Mainly indoors, but may be required to work outdoors exposed to elements (heat, rain, etc.).
Physical DemandsLifting, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling for extended periods. Extensive walking and standing. Ability to lift up to 100-pound items with or without assistance while maintaining balance. Flexible reach above shoulder level; able to push and pull for extended periods.
Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkPart-time. Hours are flexible and varied to meet event demands. Must be able to work extended and/or irregular hours including day, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Required Education And Experience- Minimum of one (1) year related knowledge, experience, and skills in a similar position.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Trade or technical school training in related discipline preferred.
- Valid State of Alabama Driver License preferred.
- Knowledgeable of maintenance and repair practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards of building trades and necessary safety precautions.
- Capable of working unsupervised after instruction.
- Ability to understand oral and written English instructions.
- Ability to work under pressure and extended irregular hours.
- Capable of using and caring for general maintenance/hand tools, repair tools, and equipment.
- Ability to safely operate a forklift (certification preferred), hand trucks, and related equipment.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
