Pneumatic Tube Mechanic -Hospital Maintenance

Looking to use your mechanical and troubleshooting skills in a hospital setting where your work makes a daily impact? UAB Facilities Hospital Maintenance is seeking a Pneumatic Tube Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on the pneumatic tube system equipment and related instrumentation that supports hospital operations.

Essential Accountabilities
  • Interprets schematic and ladder diagrams and uses standard electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems to plan, build, and assemble equipment and devices.
  • Communicates with hospital staff to understand needs and resolve tube system issues.
  • Assists with repairing and rebuilding pneumatic tube stations and transfer units, including replacing motors, side plates, controls, seals, and electronics. Assists with rebuilding tube carriers, replacing seals, latches, and related parts.
  • Uses schematic or ladder diagrams to diagnose and troubleshoot issues. Resets the pneumatic system from the tube monitor station and uses software tools to monitor system activity and reviews system data.
  • Tracks carrier movement through the system using software tools and adjusts routing as needed. Works with lead personnel to recommend system improvements.
  • Attends safety meetings and other departmental meetings/training. Completes training in a timely manner.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience.
  • Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and ladder diagrams
  • Knowledge of electronics engineering
  • Ability to read and understand schematic and ladder diagrams
  • Working knowledge of electronics
  • Knowledge of applicable compliance standards
  • Experience with pneumatic tube or related electronic systems
  • Basic computer skills (pneumatic tube system software preferred)
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Flexibility to meet on‑call needs
  • Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities to include:
    • Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
    • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet
    • Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings in the hospital
    • Working in confined spaces
    • Working within extreme temperature ranges
    • Ability to wear a respirator and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
