Overview

Primary Function
The Aircraft Structural Mechanic III is responsible for assessing aircraft damage and drafting repair procedures for aircraft structural and composite components. Must utilize advanced metalworking practices and depot level techniques to form, cut, bend, and fasten new or repaired components to damaged structures. Must be highly proficient in close tolerance drilling/reaming for installation of high-strength fasteners. Expert in operating powered and non-powered metalworking tooling and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect and assess damage to aircraft structural components and formulate repair or replacement procedures using applicable technical data.
  • Remove and install close tolerance, high-strength fasteners in major aircraft structural components.
  • Design structural repairs, modifications, and corrosion protection treatments with respect to original strength, weight, and contour to maintain structural integrity.
  • Perform post-repair flight control weight and balance functions as well as control surface rigging per designated technical orders.
  • Inspect components and repairs for structural serviceability according to specifications and technical publications.
  • Manufacture or use jigs, fixtures, forms, and molds to fabricate repair or replacement parts.
  • Use advanced metalworking practices, equipment, and tools to form, cut, bend, and fasten replacement or repair parts to damaged structures and components.
  • Train shop drawing and depot level metal layout techniques; shop mathematics; corrosion identification, removal, repair, and prevention; cleaning of metals; application of protective coatings and markings.
  • Recommend methods to improve equipment performance and maintenance procedures.
  • Use automated maintenance systems: input, validate, and analyze data processed by those systems; inspect, clear, and close out completed maintenance discrepancies.
  • Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
  • Store, handle, and dispose of hazardous waste and materials according to environmental standards and company processes.
  • Operate and maintain related Aircraft Support Equipment (SE).
  • Monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, document maintenance actions, and time-change databases using automated systems.
  • Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
  • Maintain strict tool control procedures; report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools; inventory and inspect tools regularly and replace worn or broken tools.
  • Comply with safety rules; promptly report accidents, injuries, safety violations, and unsafe practices to supervisor.
  • Maintain equipment records and verify work performed satisfactorily.
  • Perform other related duties to meet ongoing organizational needs.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has the responsibility and authority to carry out assigned tasks.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Highly skilled in depot-level processes and procedures for replacement of major structural components.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong decision analysis and problem-solving skills; able to communicate issues to management.
  • Knowledge of fixed-wing aircraft construction features and characteristics of aerospace materials, including proper use, storage of acids, solvents, primers, paints, and hazardous waste handling.
  • Extensive knowledge in fabrication and depot repair of metal, tubing, cable, plastic, fiberglass, bonded honeycomb, and composite components.
  • Intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office); ability to learn additional software; working knowledge of advanced software preferred.
  • Ability to use respirators, forced air, or other breathing equipment as required.
  • Ability to enter data accurately into databases and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with all levels of management and staff; ability to work with others.
  • Proficiency with general office equipment (fax, phone, copier, scanner, printers).
  • Ability to follow processes and deliver strong customer service, including active listening and timely follow-up.
  • Ability to understand corporate policies and align with company goals.
  • Basic mathematical computation skills and the ability to work independently and multi-task.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 12+ years of relevant aircraft structural maintenance experience with fixed/rotary wing aircraft (commercial, Government, or DoD).
  • 5+ years of depot-level structural maintenance experience.
  • Previous Air Force Specialty Code 2A773 highly desirable.
  • Multi-aspect aviation qualifications and ability to train these skills.
  • Experience supporting DoD contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of depot-level maintenance concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant certification a plus.
