Executive Vice President Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau Position Summary

The Executive Vice President (EVP) is the primary executive responsible for driving the economic impact of tourism for Greater Birmingham and Jefferson County. This role provides strategic leadership and direct oversight for the Convention Sales, Tourism, and Destination Experience departments, ensuring the achievement of annual room night and revenue goals. Furthermore, the EVP is charged with championing the organization's evolution from destination marketing to holistic destination management, fostering data‑driven decision‑making, innovation, and strategic partnerships that enhance the long‑term vitality and competitiveness of the destination.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Execution
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic direction, financial health, and long‑range planning of the organization.
  • Develop and execute the organization's annual sales and marketing business plans, ensuring alignment with the overall strategic vision and performance targets.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive performance reports to the President & CEO and Board of Directors, providing strategic analysis and forecasting.
  • Represent the Greater Birmingham CVB at a senior level at key industry trade shows, client events, community forums, and speaking engagements.
Departmental Oversight & Performance
  • Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and oversight for the Vice Presidents of Convention Sales, Tourism, and Destination Experience to achieve or exceed annual performance goals.
  • Establish clear performance metrics and accountability structures for all subordinate departments, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of market trends, competitive intelligence, and customer needs to ensure Birmingham’s competitive advantage.
Data, Innovation & Digital Transformation
  • Champion a data‑centric culture by overseeing the organization’s business intelligence strategy. Utilize predictive analytics and performance data to forecast trends, optimize resource allocation, and drive strategic decision‑making.
  • Drive organizational innovation by identifying, evaluating, and implementing new technologies, digital platforms, and business models that enhance sales effectiveness, operational efficiency, and the visitor journey.
Destination & Partnership Development
  • Lead destination development initiatives by identifying and advocating for improvements in infrastructure, public spaces, and local amenities that enhance the overall visitor and resident experience.
  • Cultivate and manage strategic alliances with non‑traditional partners, including economic development agencies, universities, tech incubators, and arts/cultural institutions to create a holistic and competitive destination ecosystem.
  • Develop and integrate a destination sustainability framework that promotes responsible tourism, mitigates negative impacts, and ensures the economic benefits of tourism are shared with the local community.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive senior leadership experience within a Destination Management Organization (DMO), hospitality, or a related tourism/economic development field. Direct experience in managing sales, servicing, and tourism functions is required.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Hospitality Management, or a related field. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
  • Strategic Acumen: Proven ability to think strategically, anticipate future trends, and translate long‑term vision into actionable, measurable plans.
  • Leadership & Management: Demonstrated success in leading, managing, and mentoring high‑performing, multidisciplinary teams. Ability to foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
