Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Primary Nurse Practitioner, Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant.
Work schedule:
Full‑time, day shift, 4‑10 hour shifts (7:30 am‑5:30 pm). No weekends, holidays, or on‑call time required. CME allowance:
Full‑time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance that can be used for recertification, applicable fees, CME courses, etc., that occur after a new employee’s start date.
The Division of Hematology/Oncology at UAB Hospital is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a full‑time, day‑shift position in our Hematology/Oncology clinic. This role involves the evaluation and management of patients receiving care for various malignancies. The APP will work closely with an oncologist to ensure safe and appropriate delivery of care and may assist in performing procedures within the defined specialty scope of practice.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience in Hematology/Oncology, including knowledge of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and management of treatment‑related complications.
Provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to medical services patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician or under supervision of a Board‑Certified Physician. The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral. Coordinate plan of care, discharge, and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the patient’s needs. Plan and coordinate health‑care education for patients, families, and other health‑care providers.
Perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments. Interpret, analyze, and evaluate patient medical records and social data. Perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement. Coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans focused on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Plans include patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
- Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, care plans, and care provided.
- Order and interpret laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
- Maintain records and reports required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC). May coordinate or participate in performance and quality improvement activities.
- Assist in coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and liaison between the patient and other health‑care providers.
- Provide assistance in orientation and training of new clinical personnel as needed. Provide educational information by conducting workshops, in‑service training, and distributing appropriate materials for patients and staff.
- Serve as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff and patients in the area of specialty.
- Provide a safe environment for patients and others.
- Demonstrate responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree in nursing with a Family NP, Adult Primary NP, or Adult Acute Care NP certification, or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Work experience may NOT substitute for the educational requirement.
Preferences: Clinical experience with infusion therapy and Hematology/Oncology is strongly preferred.
Licenses/Certifications/RegistrationsCurrently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) Specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners with certification as a PA‑C by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
