Position

Nurse Manager (RN)

Location:

Birmingham, AL. An acute care, 194‑bed inpatient psychiatric facility serving adolescents and adults.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the appearance and improvement of the unit.
  • Supervises nursing staff in carrying out nursing duties.
  • Ensures treatment plans are accurately charted and signed by physicians.
  • Conducts unit tours.
  • Participates in developing nursing philosophy, objectives, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assists in staffing pattern planning to address continuity of care and acuity needs.
  • Facilitates collaboration between nursing and medical staff.
  • Supports a professional growth environment.
  • Evaluates and promotes nursing morale and esprit de corps.
  • Educates staff in a systematic manner.
  • Serves on the Nursing Management Committee and other committees as designated.
  • Participates in staff development programs and orientation of new employees.
  • Provides a safe therapeutic environment that protects patients’ rights.
  • Assesses patients’ physical needs.
  • Responds appropriately to crisis situations.
  • Intervenes to decrease panic in disturbed patients.
  • Applies restraints or imposes seclusion in emergency situations following policy and documentation requirements.
  • Admits, discharges, and transfers patients based on physician orders.
  • Assists with procedures and physical exams.
  • Safely prepares, administers, and monitors medication results.
  • Reviews medical records and records physician orders.
  • Teaches patients and families.
  • Incorporates cost containment into nursing plans.
  • Participates in interdepartmental activities to improve communication, coordination, and quality patient care.
  • Manages assigned nursing stations.
  • Ensures orders are transcribed and signed off accurately and timely.
  • Conducts monthly nursing staff meetings with unit managers, creating agenda and minutes.
  • Recommends employment and discharge of staff to Administration.
  • Monitors FTEs according to budgetary guidelines.
  • Motivates staff to perform duties efficiently and positively.
  • Evaluates employees with Program Managers and Nursing House Supervisor promptly.
  • Investigates unusual incidents, medication errors, and complaints from patients, staff, and other departments and reports appropriately.
  • Emphasizes maintenance of a therapeutic environment, patients’ rights, nursing process, safety, and patient participation.
  • Certifies CPR annually and ensures staff are certified.
  • Relieves staff for breaks, groups, meals, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with JCAHO standards.
  • Participates in reporting and follow‑up regarding employee and patient infection control issues.
  • Assigns patients and unit responsibilities to nursing personnel as needed.
  • Assumes patient care and unit responsibilities for assigned unit on a regular basis.
  • Works effectively with other department heads, subordinates, supervisors, physicians, and other individuals.
  • Displays good listening skills, views all sides without bias, and communicates ideas clearly.
  • Provides relief of house supervisors on a rotational basis.
  • Ensures competency on the Pyxis system.
  • Provides training on the Pyxis system to nurse managers and HCBH nurses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred; five years of psychiatric nursing experience in a related specialty may be substituted.
  • Minimum two years psychiatric nursing experience, working with adolescents preferred.
  • Three years psychiatric nursing management preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse status in the State of Alabama.
