Position Description
Advanced Practice Provider – CV Surgery Unit
We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our Cardiovascular Surgery Unit team.
Accepted credentials:
Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- Full‑time, 12‑hour overnight shifts (6 pm–6 am)
- Approximately 14–16 shifts per month
- Weekends and holidays required
- Annual stipend of $20 000 (paid monthly)
- Full‑time benefits package
- Annual CME allowance of $2 000
The APP will be responsible for seeing cardiovascular surgical, interventional cardiology, and structural interventional patients in an inpatient setting, including new consults and overnight admissions. The APP will perform history and physical examinations, appropriate diagnoses, and non‑operative procedural support. No operative responsibilities are required.
UAB Medicine offers APPs a collaborative environment where they can lead, innovate, and contribute to research and best‑practice development.
General ResponsibilitiesProvide medical care and treatment within the established scope of practice for surgical patients under the physicians’ direction. Coordinate plans of care, discharge, and specialty referrals. Perform physical examinations and assessments. Interpret patient records. Assist physicians with procedures as per collaborative agreement. Participate in performance improvement activities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans based on thorough assessments; include patient‑ and family‑education, prescriptions, labs, diagnostics, and therapies.
- Ensure complete documentation of assessments, plans, and care delivered.
- Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory and The Joint Commission requirements.
- Assist in research protocols and serve as a liaison between patients and other providers.
- Provide orientation and training to new clinical personnel.
- Deliver educational workshops and materials to patients and staff.
- Serve as the expert clinical resource for specialty staff.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients.
- Demonstrate commitment to professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in Nursing with Acute Care NP certification
* or* accreditation from a Physician Assistant program. Education requirement must be met; work experience does not substitute.
• Certified Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with CRNP Acute Care from the Alabama Board of Nursing
* or* licensed Physician Assistant with PA‑C from the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA) required or to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required depending on the unit/department.
• No operative responsibilities or duties required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of procedures, protocols, and techniques for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions.
