Day shift: 10 hr shifts per week, 8‑9 shifts per month.
Weekends and holidays are required.
Position HighlightsThe Division of Hematology/Oncology at UAB Hospital is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a part‑time, day‑shift position in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. This role involves the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with hematologic malignancies, as well as those undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The APP will provide continuity of care for adult bone marrow transplant patients throughout the pre‑, peri‑, post‑, and long‑term follow‑up phases of transplant.
The APP will also assist in performing procedures within the defined specialty scope of practice. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in Hematology/Oncology, including knowledge of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and cellular therapies such as CAR‑T, along with the management of treatment‑related complications. Experience with bone marrow transplantation, including post‑transplant care and graft‑versus‑host disease management, is preferred.
To provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to medical or surgical patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician or under supervision of a Board‑Certified Physician. The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral. To coordinate plan of care, discharge and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age specific needs of the patient.
To plan and coordinate health care education for patient, family and other health care providers as needed. To perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments. To interpret, analyze and evaluate patient’s medical record and social data. To perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement. To coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulates and implements comprehensive patient care plans focused on surgical interventions. Plans include patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
- Ensures complete documentation of patient assessments, patient care plans, and care provided.
- Orders and interprets laboratory and other diagnostic tests for the patient.
- Maintains records and reports as required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC). May coordinate and/or participate in performance and quality improvement activities.
- May assist in the coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and a liaison between the patient and other health care providers.
- Provides assistance in orientation and/or training of new clinical personnel as needed. Conducts workshops, in‑service training and distributes appropriate educational materials for patients and staff.
- Serves as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff and patients in the area of specialty.
- Provides a safe environment for patients and others.
- Demonstrates a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in Nursing with an Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
