Position Description

The following advanced practice providers may be considered for this role:
Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Primary Nurse Practitioner, Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant.

Work Schedule

Full‑time, benefited. Day shift, 4–10‑hour shifts. No weekends, holidays, or on‑call time required.

CME Allowance

Full‑time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance. This can be used for recertification, applicable fees, CME courses, and other continuing education that occurs after a new employee's start date.

Role Overview

The UAB Division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a full‑time, day‑shift position in the Hem/Onc Phase 1 Outpatient Clinic. This position is a specialized clinical trial requiring knowledge of investigational therapies, safety monitoring, and adherence to research protocols and regulatory standards. The candidate will evaluate and manage hematology and oncology patients, with knowledge of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and side‑effect management mandatory.

In concert with a mandated mandating physician, the APP will provide high‑quality patient care, collaborate across teams, and participate in research initiatives to advance best practices.

General Responsibilities

Provide medical care and treatment within the established scope of practice to patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician or a Board‑Certified Physician. Coordinate planning of care, discharge, and specialty referrals to meet patient needs, and provide health education for patients, families, and other health‑care providers. Perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments, interpret patient records and social data, assist or perform procedures per collaborative agreement, and participate in performance‑improvement activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans based on thorough physical and psychosocial assessments, focusing on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Plan includes patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
  • Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, care plans, and care provided.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
  • Maintain records and reports required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC) and participate in performance and quality‑improvement activities.
  • Assist in coordinating research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and liaison between patients and other health‑care providers.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new clinical personnel; provide educational information through workshops, in‑service training, and distribution of materials for patients and staff.
  • Serve as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff and patients in the specialty area.
  • Provide a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Demonstrate a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Minimum:
    Master’s degree in nursing with a Family NP, Adult Primary NP, or Adult Acute Care NP certification, or graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Work experience does not substitute for the education requirement.
  • Preference:
    Clinical experience with infusion therapy and Hematology/Oncology.
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

Currently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) Specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing, or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners with certification as a Physician Assistant (PA‑C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required, or to be obtained within 30 days of employment.

Depending on unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the AHA may be required.
