Position Description

Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (APP) roles within the Division of Hematology/Oncology are considered for this position. The role involves the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with hematologic malignancies and those undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The applicant will provide continuity of care for adult hematology and bone marrow transplant patients, assist in procedures within the specialty scope, and manage treatment‑related complications such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and cellular therapies like CAR‑T.

Work schedule:

Full‑time, day shift (7:30 am–5:30 pm), 4–10 hours per week. No on‑call time required, but weekend and holiday coverage is needed. CME allowance:
Full‑time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance for recertification and CME courses after the start date.

General Responsibilities

Provide medical care and treatment within the established scope of practice under the direction of the collaborating physician or a board‑certified physician. Coordinate plans of care, discharge, and specialty referrals; develop patient education; perform comprehensive physical examinations; analyze patient records; assist physicians with procedures; maintain documentation; and participate in performance improvement activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Formulate and implement comprehensive patient care plans based on thorough physical and psychosocial assessments, including education, prescriptions, lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
  • Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, care plans, and services provided.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests and maintain required records for regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission.
  • Participate in quality improvement and research protocols, acting as a patient advocate and liaison between the patient and other health care providers.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new clinical personnel; conduct workshops, in‑service training, and distribute educational materials for patients and staff.
  • Serve as expert clinical resource to staff and patients, provide a safe environment, demonstrate professional growth, and perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Minimum:
    Master’s degree in nursing with Adult Acute Care NP certification, or graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Work experience does not substitute for education.
  • Preferences:
    Prior experience in hematology/oncology or bone‑marrow transplant, including knowledge of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and CAR‑T or other cellular therapies, and management of treatment‑related complications.
Licenses, Certifications, & Registrations
  • Certified Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing, or licensed Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners with PA‑C certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of employment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required depending on the unit.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of procedures, protocols, and techniques for diagnosing and treating human disease.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, tools, and programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self‑directed, self‑motivated, and able to multitask.
  • Problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team while maintaining patient confidentiality.
