Job Highlights

UAB Medicine’s Heart & Vascular Center (HVC) is a 48-bed unit – including open bays, private rooms, and 15 procedure labs – designed to streamline preop and recovery care for cardiac, neuro interventional, and interventional radiology patients. Patient care on this unit supports the cath (ACL) lab, electrophysiology (EP) lab, vascular interventional radiology (VIR) lab, and neuro interventional lab procedure areas.

Staff in this unit conduct assessments and procedures that could include cardioversions, ablations, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), angioplasty, nephrostomy, biliary drains, thrombectomy, and transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE). It's a dynamic, fast-paced environment where you are constantly learning and challenging your critical assessment skills as a nurse providing clinical care to a diverse patient population. Plus, it’s a role where team members can experience instant gratification from helping make a positive outcome.

Staff working in the cath lab, electrophysiology lab, and vascular interventional radiology lab procedure areas can expect to be on call 5-8 days per month, including after hours, weekends, and holidays. Staff must be able to respond within 30 minutes for emergent cases and can be given access to a room if needed. Ideal candidates have previous critical care experience, but it is not required.

Additional training is provided for candidates without experience.

The HVC is a part of the Cardiovascular Institute at UAB Medicine, which is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 50 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report and numerous other awards and recognitions. From high blood pressure to heart transplants and everything in between, our experts provide the full range of cardiovascular care.
