Senior Laboratory Animal Resources Technician Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Senior Laboratory Animal Resources Technician to perform and document work in accordance with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Laboratory Methods, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations, and applicable safety and health standards. The successful candidate will demonstrate a working knowledge of basic study design and execution, carrying out critical in‑life study activities in compliance with approved procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Administer test and control substances using various routes including gavage, capsule, diet/drinking water, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous methods.
  • Administer anesthesia to all animal species housed within the facility and monitor animals throughout the recovery process.
  • Collect, review, and record in‑life and husbandry data across multiple study types, including body weights, clinical observations, and food consumption data.
  • Perform reproductive‑related procedures such as mating, vaginal lavage, estrous cycle determination, handling of pregnant and lactating animals, pup handling, sexing, identification, and evaluation of pubertal developmental milestones.
  • Safely handle and restrain a wide range of animal species within Animal Biosafety Levels (ABSL) 1, 2, and 3, as required.
  • Support the onboarding and training of new team members in laboratory and animal‑handling techniques.
  • Collect biological samples and specimens according to study protocols.
  • Observe animals for abnormal clinical findings, accurately document observations, and promptly report concerns to veterinary staff.
  • Perform animal identification procedures using approved methods.
  • Assist with surgical procedures as required.
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Conduct animal necropsies and harvest tissues in accordance with study protocols.
  • Set up, maintain, and review study files within the data collection system.
  • Perform electronic randomization in compliance with study requirements.
  • Serve as Study Lead when assigned, including ordering and organizing study supplies, coordinating required documentation, and reviewing study protocols against ACUP and BPR documentation.
  • Monitor the work of junior staff members, providing coaching, mentoring, and training to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain forms and SOPs as needed.
  • Identify issues and provide solutions to a broad range of technical and operational problems.
  • Assist in the development of new methods and techniques to support research objectives.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in animal science, animal husbandry, and animal research.
  • Must have GLP experience and familiarity with running studies and animal techniques.
  • Experience with primate handling and husbandry.
  • Proficiency in study design, laboratory research, vivarium operations, and animal handling.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science‑related field with at least six years of related laboratory experience.
  • Ability to read, understand, and adhere to SOPs, GLP requirements, study protocols, and safety procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including an N95 respirator or Powered Air‑Purifying Respirator (PAPR), for extended periods.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime, including rotating weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of standard scientific principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Proven ability to learn new tasks and procedures efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor others.
Work Environment

This role is based in an ABSL‑3 research facility with animal labs and a vivarium. The work schedule is 7am‑4pm, Monday to Friday, with work required every third weekend. Employees have two days off the week following weekend shifts. The facility…
