Position: Damage Investigator - Jefferson County

About the Role

Damage Investigator (DI) plays a critical support role to Operations partners in damage prevention and quality assurance initiatives. The DI reports directly to the Operations Manager and is responsible for objectively investigating utility damages and communicating findings to management. The DI works to improve quality by identifying and addressing field deficiencies, thereby reducing damages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Operations partners to identify potential opportunities for damage prevention through the field audit process.
  • Identify at‑risk field technicians who need additional training to prevent potential damages.
  • Perform field audits for accuracy of marks and compliance with applicable state laws, regulations, and contractual obligations per client.
  • Correct field risk findings and coach/mentor technicians.
  • Provide frequent and ongoing feedback to Field Check partners to improve quality results, reduce damages, and ensure audit requests are submitted with proper documentation.
  • Communicate audit and investigation findings with quality assurance and operations management, both verbally and in written format.
  • Effectively balance various job responsibilities while meeting daily productivity and efficiency standards and completion deadlines.
  • Provide witness testimony in small claims and litigated cases when necessary.
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with clients, excavators, regulators, employees, and the public.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Support hands‑on utility locate training and education in damage prevention.
  • Remain current on emerging learning methodologies and technologies.
  • Produce tickets and work weekends as needed.
  • Mentor and field train new employees.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience locating underground utilities or related experience.
  • Thorough understanding of utility locating procedures and marking standards; proficiency with locating equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot difficult locates and interpret utility plats.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor technicians.
  • Critical thinking skills to analyze facts, anticipate results, and make decisions based on available information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with diverse individuals at all levels.
  • Proficiency in computer‑based technology and ability to learn new systems and software.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast‑paced dynamic environment.
  • Responsiveness to emergency calls as needed.
  • Proficient use of hand tools and equipment (e.g., shovels, screwdrivers, wrenches, push‑pins).
  • Ability to carry 3–5 lb electronic locating equipment for extended periods; lift objects ≤ 50 lbs, or > 50 lbs with tool aids.

Compensation

Wage range for Damage Investigator – Jefferson County: $20.00 – $24.00 per hour.
