RESEARCH SCIENTIST SENIOR
The Volpicelli‑Daley lab at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a senior researcher in the pathobiology and structural biology of protein aggregation in Parkinson’s disease. This position offers unique networking, career building, and presentation opportunities.
General Responsibilities- Oversee substantial research projects, ensuring rigorous scientific standards.
- Manage project scope, cross‑functional collaboration, and secure funding through grant proposals.
- Exercise discretion in research decisions and shape the research agenda.
- Depending on the research focus, engage with collaborators, research animals, and specimens.
- Express and purify alpha‑synuclein using fast performance liquid chromatography and perform quality controls.
- Troubleshoot and optimize alpha‑synuclein amplification assays.
- Assist with biochemical and biophysical assays to assess alpha‑synuclein fibril structure.
- Design experiments in collaboration with Dr. Volpelli‑Daley.
- Collect, store, and analyze data in an organized manner, maintaining e‑notebooks regularly.
- Supervise graduate students and Scientist I who help with the project.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience with protein purification.
- Experience with tissue and cell fractionation techniques.
- Experience with chaperones related to alpha‑synuclein and tau fibrillization.
- Experience with proteomics to identify co‑factors involved in protein amyloid fibril formation.
- Evidence of project leadership, driving direction from hypothesis generation to publication.
- Proactive optimization and troubleshooting of experiments using the latest techniques.

Qualifications- Doctorate degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience.
- OR Master’s degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience.
- OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience.
- Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
