Position Summary The Dokland Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham welcomes applications for a Researcher III position. The researcher will be involved in two projects: (1) The structural biology of staphylococcal bacteriophages and the mobilization of Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity islands. (2) The assembly, processing and activation of ribosomes in Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci). The researcher may also be involved in projects related to capsid assembly in HIV.
General Responsibilities As directed, to independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals. To collect, enter, summarize and analyze data. To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications. To develop and improve techniques for the lab.
Key Duties & Responsibilities Conduct research involving bacterial genetics, biochemistry and structural biology approaches. Assist other researchers with their experiments. Provide general lab support, including media preparation, bacterial growth, gel electrophoresis, and electron microscopy. Keep accurate lab notes, give presentations and participate in lab meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Salary Range : $ 35,570 - $ 59,800
Qualifications Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor s degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Preferences MS in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, biological sciences, or related life science field AND at least 1 year of experience in a research lab.
