For over 50 years, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) has served as a premier entertainment destination attracting a broad array of events across a diverse collection of venues. Centrally located in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama's Uptown Entertainment District, the BJCC campus includes Legacy Arena at the BJCC, the Coca Cola Amphitheater, Protective Stadium, BJCC Concert Hall, over 220,000 square feet of meeting & exhibition space, and City Walk BHAM, a 31-acre public outdoor space with a dog park, pickleball courts, skate park and much more.

The Public Safety Ambassador for complex security, will play a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure and enjoyable environment for performers, employees, and visitors. This position is responsible for patrolling the assigned area in a visible manner, protecting and preserving the environment by professionally enforcing rules, answering questions, securing access to restricted areas, and responding to emergencies.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Provides proactive customer service by assisting guests by answering questions in a courteous welcoming and professional demeanor.
• Provides exceptional guest experience by ensuring compliance with venue safety and security procedures.
• Maintains compliance by circulating through assigned areas throughout the shift, following post orders and instructions.
• Prevents and responds to resolve event disruptions and altercations among guests.
• Responds to accidents, medical emergencies, search and emergency operations to offer assistance and lead emergency evacuations protocols.
• Assists with crowd control and emergency response as directed.
• Responds to accidents, medical emergencies, search and emergency operations.
• Guards assigned restricted areas and ensuring only authorized personnel are permitted entry.
• Verify credentials and ensure only authorized personnel enter restricted zones.
• Communicate with Security Command and Event Management personnel as needed.
• Observe and report any unusual or suspicious behavior.
• Effectively listen, understand, and resolve issues or complaints while maintaining positive relationships with customers and the public.
• Identify, report, and respond to safety and security violations, suspicious activity, or criminal behavior.
• Assist with crowd control during events and act as a deterrent to crime through visible patrol.
• Maintain positive working relationships with internal, external partners, and guests at the BJCC.
• Contact supervisor or manager if issues arise beyond your scope or ability to resolve.
• Work closely with local law enforcement to address security concerns and criminal activity.
• Complete reports and logs such as incident reports, daily activity reports (DARs), and other security documentation.
• Ensure no weapons or harmful items enter the venue by inspecting every guest with metal detector or pat-down search as assigned.
• Safeguard the venue against theft and property damage.
• Communicate clearly using radios, hand signals and flashlights. Remain in constant contact throughout the shift.
• Assist with setting up area before opening (stanchions, table configuring, etc.)
• Requires the ability to think quickly and make sound decisions with excellent surveillance and observation skills.
• Evaluate situations independently and use sound judgment to resolve issues in a timely manner.
• Performs other duties as required.

Work Environment This position is fast paced and may have a moderate to extensive stress level associated with dealing with crowds of public visitors. The environment is indoors and outdoors and exposed to the elements (heat, rain, etc.).

Physical Demands Position requires lifting, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, running, squatting, and kneeling for extended periods of time. Extensive walking and/or standing and the ability to ride a bicycle. Ability to lift up to 50-pound items with or without assistance, while maintaining good balance. Must be flexible enough to reach above shoulder level and be able to push and pull for extended periods of time.
