Job Description - HVAC MECHANIC (T236108)

Position Summary

To perform skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and inspection of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems across existing and renovated facilities. Ensure equipment operates efficiently and safely by conducting routine and preventive maintenance activities, including inspection, troubleshooting, adjustment, and component replacement. Respond to routine and emergency service requests in a timely manner and support building operations.

Essential Accountabilities
  • Maintain, repair, modify, replace, install, and perform routine and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of light and heavy duty HVAC equipment for existing and renovated facilities.
  • Inspect installations of HVAC equipment installed by others.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance, including operating, cleaning, inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, tightening, replacing, lubricating, and reporting issues on assigned HVAC equipment.
  • Read, understand and interpret blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturers’ operating and/or maintenance specifications related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, special equipment, building structures and finishes.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel, including electricians, plumbers, maintenance technicians, and sheet metal workers, in completing work assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Skill in performing routine and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and equipment manuals.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, tools, and equipment used in maintenance work.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other trades.
  • Ability to respond to service requests and prioritize work in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated advanced HVAC competencies, including direct digital control installation and setup, airflow measurement and calculation, compressor overhaul, and refrigerant handling.
Hourly Pay Range

$22.35 – $32.00 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 am–3:30 pm (subject to change to meet the needs of the department and University).

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited Technical School of HVAC and four years of related experience. Work experience may substitute for the education requirement.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified with a Section 608 Technician Type I, II, or III Certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

Motor Vehicle Record
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • At least three years of driving experience.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and work at heights above thirty (30) feet.
  • Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
  • Work in confined spaces and extreme temperatures.
  • Work within extreme temperature ranges.
Location and Employment Status

University campus. Regular, onsite, day/first shift.
