Job Summary
City of Birmingham seeks a well‑qualified Electrician to perform professional electrical maintenance and repair of equipment and fixtures in public buildings and structures, as well as high‑voltage industrial electrical systems such as large motors, fans, pumps, and various computer‑controlled industrial equipment in large buildings or industrial settings. Electricians plan and execute assignments, resolve conflicts, coordinate work with others, and interpret policy independently in pursuit of established objectives.
Work assignments are received through work orders and verbally, performed independently with latitude for material selection, and inspected by a supervisor and city inspectors during construction and upon completion.

Minimum Qualifications- Driver's License.
- Journeyman’s Electrician Card from the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board.
- Experience reading ladder diagrams used to document industrial control logic systems, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment.
- Experience performing industrial electrical work (e.g., motor drive units, variable frequency drives, PLCs, and medium and high voltage switch gear).
- Master Electrician Licensure / Electrical Contractor.
- Experience with electrical distribution systems such as 13,200 volts or more.
Job Duties
- Turn breaker switches off and lock switches out to allow for electrical repairs.
- Test electrical components and wiring using appropriate equipment such as volt‑meters, ohmmeters, thermal guns, and frequency meters.
- Repair, overhaul, and maintain transformers, regulators, controls, switches, meters, motors, conduits, and other commercial‑grade equipment.
- Repair and maintain emergency power generation systems, including switch gear and generators.
- Test high‑voltage electrical equipment including circuits, transformers, high‑voltage switches, phase shifters, and electronic equipment boards.
- Maintain and repair high‑voltage (i.e., > 4160 V) wiring systems and associated equipment. Conduct preventative maintenance by checking general condition, operating specifications, and connections.
- Repair and maintain industrial power generation and distribution systems, diagnosing relay logic control problems.
- Install transformers, regulators, controls, switches, meters, motors, conduits, and other electrical equipment in new or existing facilities.
- Install electrical systems, fixtures, and equipment in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal codes.
- Review blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications to plan installation.
- Integrate new electrical systems into existing facilities.
- Pull and replace motors to ensure proper functioning.
- Connect electrical wiring between controls and equipment according to wiring diagrams using hand tools.
- Obtain and maintain required certifications, permits, and documentation.
- Read and interpret blueprints and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot and integrate new equipment.
- Coordinate with various agencies (e.g., Alabama Power) to perform work as needed.
- Conduct annual inspections of high‑voltage sites.
Job involves sustained moderate physical exertion and occasional prolonged lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing. May involve lifting items up to 50 lbs.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed both in employer‑owned facilities such as workshops and in field locations. It requires use of hand tools and electrical measuring equipment, exposure to live 120 V and 240 V circuits, and occasional exposure to extreme temperatures.
