Position: HVAC PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

HVAC Preventative Maintenance Mechanic (T236205)

Join UAB Campus Maintenance as an HVAC PM Mechanic and help keep our campus running smoothly. Position Summary

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and monitors building automation and HVAC controls. Reads, understands, and interprets blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules, and manufacturer specifications as they relate to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and special equipment, building structures and finishes. May assist other maintenance personnel in completing work tasks and respond to requests for routine and emergency maintenance and service from building occupants.

Accountabilities
  • All duties and responsibilities assigned to the position of General Mechanic.
  • Operate, adjust, install and maintain computerized energy management and control systems for HVAC equipment, chillers, boilers, etc.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on steam, gas, electric and hot water heating systems, VAV boxes, pumps, packaged air conditioning units, DX units, heat pumps, reheat units, air handling units, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, hot water converters, control valves and dampers, air compressors, room T‑Stats, air ducts, condenser and evaporator coils, and other similar equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, modifications, replacements and installations of refrigeration equipment including chillers, packaged air conditioning units, freezers, coolers, air dryers, dehumidifying equipment, ice machines, water coolers, and other similar equipment.
  • Measure, calculate, balance and adjust CFM readings for air handling systems.
  • Operate, adjust, calibrate and maintain automatic temperature controls, variable speed motor drives, variable inlet vanes, valve and damper actuators, pneumatic and electronic control systems, boiler fire control systems.
  • Utilize CFCs and HCFCs refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, maintain records, and perform all service and maintenance repairs in accordance with current EPA regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and perform duties of other positions within the Facilities Division as skills and experiences permit.
Hourly Pay Range

$20.80 – $28.00 (commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm (subject to change to meet the needs of the department and University).

Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited technical school of HVAC and four (4) years of related experience required (work experience may substitute for education requirement).
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations
  • Currently certified with a Section 608 Technician Type I, II, or III Certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) required.
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • At least three years of driving experience.
  • Acceptable MVR meeting university underwriting guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to operate handheld devices for work orders.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Mathematics and communication trades.
  • Refrigeration cycle knowledge.
  • Pneumatic, electronic, and electric HVAC controls.
  • Temperature and humidity relationships.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting and carrying at least 50 lbs.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding; working at heights above 30 ft.
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working in extreme temperature environments.
