Primary FunctionThe Aircraft Mechanics I, II, & III Sheet Metal are responsible for assessing aircraft damage and drafting repair procedures for aircraft structural and composite components. They must be able to utilize advanced metalworking practices and techniques to form, cut, bend, and fasten new or repair components to damaged structures, perform close-tolerance drilling/reaming for installation of high‑strength fasteners, and use powered or non‑powered metalworking tooling and equipment.
EssentialDuties
- Inspect and assess damage to aircraft structural components and formulate proper repair or replacement procedures using applicable technical data.
- Remove and install close‑tolerance, high‑strength fasteners in major aircraft structural components.
- Advise on structural repair, modification, and corrosion protection treatment while maintaining original strength, weight, and contour to preserve structural integrity.
- Perform post‑repair flight control weight and balance functions and control surface rigging per designated technical orders.
- Inspect components and repairs for structural serviceability according to specifications and technical publications.
- Manufacture or use jigs, fixtures, forms, and molds to fabricate repair or replacement parts.
- Use advanced metalworking practices, equipment, and tools to form, cut, bend, and fasten replacement or repair parts to damaged structures and components.
- Apply shop drawing and metal layout techniques, shop mathematics, corrosion identification, removal, repair, and prevention, cleaning of metals, and application of protective coatings and markings.
- Close completed maintenance discrepancies in automated maintenance systems.
- Document maintenance per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
- Store, handle, and dispose of hazardous waste and materials according to environmental standards and company processes.
- Operate and maintain related aircraft Support Equipment (SE).
- Use automated maintenance systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, document maintenance actions, and track database changes.
- Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
- Maintain strict tool control procedures. Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor and inventory and inspect tools regularly, replacing worn or broken tools.
- Comply with safety rules and regulations while performing day‑to‑day maintenance. Promptly report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and unsafe practices or procedures to the supervisor.
- Maintain equipment records. Enter descriptions of the work performed in maintenance records and verify that the work was performed satisfactorily.
- Perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledgeable in depot‑level processes and procedures for replacement of major structural components.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, technical documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Good decision analysis and problem‑solving skills. Ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions. Must be able to communicate issues to management.
- Able to use Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs. Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.
