Apprentice HVAC Mechanic

Looking for an innovative organization and the opportunity to learn and grow professionally? We can help! We are seeking an Apprentice HVAC Mechanic for Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Services supporting the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Birmingham Southern in Birmingham, Alabama.

This project will provide professional HVAC&R maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, corrective repair, equipment assessment, and work-order support for the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham Southern Facilities Engineering Department. The requirement encompasses HVAC&R systems supporting sixteen campus facilities.

This is an on-site position at U.S. Coast Guard TRACEN Birmingham, Alabama, Monday–Friday. On-site access is generally available between 0730 and 1600 CST;
Terrestris is responsible for managing and scheduling its workforce to meet contract performance requirements.

The Apprentice HVAC Mechanic will support the Lead and Journeyman HVAC Mechanics in the preventative maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation of commercial and industrial HVAC&R systems. This position is intended for an individual developing skilled HVAC&R trade capabilities through hands-on experience, training, and supervised field work. This position requires hands-on work in support of commercial and industrial HVAC&R maintenance. Employees must be capable of working in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and other facility locations and must be able to safely use standard trade tools and required PPE.

What does a typical day look like for an Apprentice HVAC Mechanic?

  • Assist Lead and Journeyman HVAC Mechanics with preventative maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with inspection and physical inventory of HVAC&R equipment throughout designated campus buildings.
  • Support routine inspection, cleaning, adjustment, lubrication, and maintenance activities as directed.
  • Assist with maintenance of DX split systems, package units, chilled water systems, air handling units, refrigeration appliances, chillers, cooling towers, heat reclaim units, automated building controls, exhaust and ventilation fans, hydronic pumps, and associated mechanical and electrical components.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and diagnostic activities under the direction of qualified HVAC personnel.
  • Assist with checking equipment operating conditions and recording required measurements.
  • Assist with filter replacement, equipment cleaning, component inspection, and other scheduled preventative maintenance activities.
  • Assist with refrigerant-related work only as permitted by applicable regulations, certification requirements, and the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Assist with locating and identifying potential refrigerant leaks and equipment deficiencies.
  • Assist with corrective maintenance and authorized repair work orders.
  • Help prepare work areas, tools, materials, and equipment for scheduled maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with equipment testing following maintenance and repair activities.
  • Accurately document work performed, equipment conditions, maintenance activities, and identified deficiencies.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Follow all applicable OSHA, USCG, Federal, LOTO, fall protection, electrical safety/NFPA 70E, confined-space, and other job-site safety requirements.
  • Wear required PPE and maintained contractor identification while working at the Government installation.
  • Learn and apply OEM maintenance procedures, technical manuals, and applicable HVAC&R industry practices.
  • Work under the direction of the Lead and Journeyman HVAC Mechanics while progressively developing independent trade skills.
  • Perform other HVAC&R support duties as assigned by Terrestris management.

What qualifications do you look for?

  • Demonstrated interest in developing a career in commercial or industrial HVAC&R.
  • Some HVAC&R education, vocational training, apprenticeship training, military technical training, or hands-on HVAC&R experience is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems, electrical systems, air conditioning, refrigeration, or related trades.
  • Ability to learn HVAC&R diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and safely learn the use of HVAC&R trade tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions, equipment documentation, and manufacturer procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability and willingness to work safely in mechanical rooms, rooftops, electrical rooms, and other designated facility areas.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is required for personnel performing work requiring such certification.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a three-person HVAC&R maintenance team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an HVAC&R vocational or technical program.
  • Current enrollment in or completion of an HVAC apprenticeship program.
