Looking for an innovative organization and the opportunity to learn and grow professionally? We can help! We are seeking a Journeyman Hvac Mechanic for Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Services supporting the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center (Tracen) Birmingham Southern in Birmingham, Alabama.
This project will provide professional Hvac&R maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, corrective repair, equipment assessment, and work-order support for the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham Southern Facilities Engineering Department. The requirement encompasses Hvac&R systems supporting sixteen campus facilities.
This is an on-site position at U.S. Coast Guard Tracen Birmingham, Alabama, Monday–Friday. On-site access is generally available between 0730 and 1600 Cst;

The Journeyman Hvac Mechanic will perform skilled preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, and operational testing of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (Hvac&R) equipment.
Working as part of the Terrestris Hvac&R team, the Journeyman Hvac Mechanic will support the Lead Hvac Mechanic in maintaining reliable operation of Government Hvac&R systems and completing authorized preventative and corrective maintenance work orders.
You will:
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on commercial and industrial Hvac&R equipment in accordance with OEM recommendations and established maintenance procedures.
- Inspect, operate, test, and maintain Hvac&R systems and associated components.
- Support physical inventory and condition assessments of Hvac&R equipment throughout designated campus buildings.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose Hvac&R equipment failures and degraded operating conditions.
- Perform corrective maintenance and authorized repairs under established work orders.
- Maintain and repair Dx split systems, package units, chilled water systems, air handling units, refrigeration appliances, centrifugal and air-cooled chillers, cooling towers, heat reclaim units, automated building controls, exhaust and ventilation fans, hydronic pumps, and associated electrical and mechanical subsystems.
- Diagnose electrical circuits, refrigerant-cycle problems, mechanical failures, and hydronic system issues.
- Locate and inspect systems for refrigerant leaks and perform applicable prescribed testing procedures.
- Perform refrigerant recovery, charging, recycling, and related activities in compliance with EPA Section 608 requirements.
- Take and record operating measurements including suction and discharge pressures, amp draws, delta-T, and filter pressure drops.
- Identify equipment deficiencies and communicate repair requirements to the Lead Hvac Mechanic.
- Assist with development of repair assessments, bills of materials (Boms), OEM part information, and labor-hour estimates.
- Perform repairs using Government-furnished parts and materials as authorized.
- Conduct operational testing following maintenance and repair activities.
- Document completed preventative maintenance, corrective repairs, operating measurements, and adjustments in the applicable maintenance tracking system.
- Support monthly preventative maintenance and work order reporting requirements.
- Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, and job sites in a safe and orderly condition.
- Follow OSHA, USCG, Federal, Loto, fall protection, NFPA 70E, confined space, and other applicable safety requirements.
- Assist the Lead Hvac Mechanic with mentoring and providing hands-on guidance to Apprentice personnel.
- Perform other Hvac&R maintenance and repair duties necessary to support contract requirements.

- Working knowledge of shore-side ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and systems.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial or industrial Hvac&R equipment.
- Experience with air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including electrical and mechanical components.
- Knowledge of refrigeration-cycle operation and diagnostic procedures.
- Ability to inspect equipment, identify deficiencies, and determine appropriate maintenance or repair actions.
- Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, equipment documentation, and manufacturer technical manuals.
