Position Overview
As a Software Engineer Principle within PNC's Retail Management Information Systems Technology and Product Management organization, you will be based in Birmingham, AL, Dallas, TX, Pittsburgh, PA, or Strongsville, OH. The role focuses on delivering the best experience for our customers while fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the design and implementation of end‑to‑end mainframe legacy Cobol application solutions.
- Serve as the technical authority for application architecture, design patterns, and integration approaches.
- Review and approve technical designs, code changes, and data integration logic to ensure quality, efficiency, and consistency.
- Guide teams on best practices for performance and maintainability.
- Hands‑on development and oversight of Cobol components/applications and legacy systems.
- Collaborate with product owners and business analysts to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Ensure timely delivery of features, enhancements, and defect fixes.
- Promote disciplined change management and release practices.
- Mentor and guide developers and junior team members.
- Provide technical guidance and support to colleagues and solution development.
- 12+ years of software engineering experience with deep hands‑on development expertise in mainframe/COBOL environments.
- Familiar with Endevor, mainframe DB2 database concepts, CICS, and VSAM files.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong specification writing ability.
- Ability to work with business and operations to understand requirements and create high‑ and low‑level designs.
- Comfortable learning new technologies not previously familiar with.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Strong functional knowledge of the debit card product lifecycle.
- Experience in financial services or other highly regulated industries.
- Experience using Z/OS Connect tool to build/maintain REST APIs.
- University/college degree (bachelor’s preferred) or a comparable combination of education, job‑specific certification(s), and experience.
