Software Engineer Principal

As a Software Engineer Principal within PNC's Retail Management Information Systems Technology and Product Management organization, you will be based in one of the following locations:
Birmingham, AL;
Dallas, TX;
Pittsburgh, PA; or Strongsville, OH.

• Lead the design and implementation of end-to-end mainframe legacy COBOL application solutions.
• Serve as the technical authority for application architecture, design patterns, and integration approaches.
• Review and approve technical designs, code changes, and data integration logic to ensure quality, efficiency, and consistency.
• Guide teams on best practices for performance and maintainability.
• Develop and oversee COBOL components and applications.
• Collaborate with product owners and business analysts to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Ensure timely delivery of features, enhancements, and defect fixes.
• Promote disciplined change management and release practices.
• Mentor and guide developers and junior team members.
• Provide technical guidance and support to colleagues and solution development.
• Align business strategy with software solutions.
• Propose, design, and code software solutions to address complex business needs, and oversee required technical and procedural documentation.
• Lead complex problem solving.
• Display an innovative approach to apply modern principles, methodologies, and tools to advance business initiatives and capabilities.

• 12+ years of software engineering experience with deep hands‑on development expertise and proven technical leadership in mainframe/COBOL environments.
• Familiar with Endevor, mainframe DB2 database concepts, CICS, and VSAM files.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Strong spec‑writing ability.
• Ability to work with business and operations to understand requirements and create high‑ and low‑level designs.
• Comfortable learning new technologies not previously familiar.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

• Strong functional knowledge of the debit card product lifecycle.
• Experience in financial services or other highly regulated industries.
• Experience using ZOS Connect to build and maintain REST APIs.

• Base Salary: $65,000.00 – $ (Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data, and individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive‑eligible with compensation based on performance.)
