JOB DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, establishes and coordinates the assignment, scheduling and routing of all transportation vehicles; maintain a variety of department records; perform a wide variety of specialized and analytical duties related with the safe and efficient operation of a comprehensive school bus operation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Main point of contact with bus drivers and school officials
  • Ensure all bus routes are covered and adequate staffing is available
  • Answer numerous phone calls from parents and follow through on their concerns
  • Coordinate with shop mechanics when needed
  • Receive and assign Field Trip requests
  • Produce invoices and mail to appropriate schools/departments
  • File reports and other materials
  • Must be willing and capable of operating a school bus as needed to support student transportation needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or equivalent. Associates/Technical degree preferred.
  • Valid Alabama driver’s License, CDL, and Alabama school bus driver’s license. (Class B commercial driver’s license with "P" and "S" endorsements)
  • Minimum two (2) years successful experience as dispatcher or general clerical experience preferred.
  • Computer proficiency, experience with computerized mapping software preferred.
  • Ability to relate and communicate with people in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to effectively organize and assign tasks to school bus drivers.
  • Ability to deal with driver problems and complaints.
  • Extensive knowledge of Birmingham/Jefferson County geography, names and locations of schools and streets, and ability to relate this knowledge to routing of buses.
  • Must meet and maintain standards required by city vehicle insurance policy.
  • Subject to drug tests as required by law and school board policy for transporting students and operating school owned vehicles. Must pass physical examination in accordance with the provisions of Section 16-27-4.1 of the Code of Alabama 1975.
  • Job related demands (including, but not limited to):
    Routinely required to communicate verbally and in writing, read and comprehend mapping programs. Moderate walking, standing, climbing, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching. System may require physical/testing.
