Rail Car and Locomotive Inspector
Manages the quality of inspections and repairs of both rail cars and locomotives for defects and unsafe conditions within a Mechanical terminal and on the line of road. Ensures work is performed safely according to CSX Transportation (CSXT) safety rules and is compliant with Association of American Railroads (AAR) standards and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations. Effectively manages best practices in safety, quality, and production.
Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement within assigned area of responsibility. Serves a primary role in operational budgeting. Manages conflict resolution cross-functionally. Develops and coaches both managers and union employees.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
- Execute and communicate the safety plan outlined by the department, shop management, and safety committees.
- Facilitate thorough safety and job briefings to promote safe practices and proper procedures for completing assigned tasks.
- Conduct safety observations and operational tests to ensure compliance.
- Eliminate, control, and communicate hazards and safety issues within the shop and yard, elevating for resolution as necessary.
- Manage activities of car inspection, train yard, and line-of-road ensuring that required work is performed to meet CSXT, FRA, and AAR standards.
- Coach, develop, and train others to achieve desired results.
- Delegate and monitor daily shop and yard strategies.
- Forecast staffing, scheduling of personnel, and material requirements to meet business objectives.
- Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED
- 7 or more years of supervisory experience in Transportation, Logistics, Rail Operations, Business/Strategic Management, Skilled Trades (building/construction, electrical, mechanical), or the Military
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
- 7 or more years of supervisory experience in Transportation, Logistics, Rail Operations, Business/Strategic Management, Skilled Trades (building/construction, electrical, mechanical), or the Military
Knowledge and
Skills:
- Railroad industry knowledge
- Microsoft Office skills
- Basic mechanical concepts
- FRA and AAR regulatory standards
- Financial concepts

Job Requirements:
- Available to report to work with two-hour advance notice
- Different shifts as assigned in a 24 hour/7 days a week operation (incl working weekends)
- Hours which include rotating on-call responsibilities which may be outside standard hours
- Work with equipment that intensifies the heat factor
- Work hours may vary in length and schedule (may include a non-standard work week)
- Work outside in all weather conditions
- Work in a dynamic environment with many distractions
- Work flexible days/hours as dictated by business needs
