Job Summary
Drivers operate heavy‑duty trucks with front, side, or rear‑end load lift attachments dependent on the line of business and the type of truck they are operating. They transport material to disposal, transfer, or recycling facilities when trucks reach legal load capacity. Commercial drivers provide pickup services for containers filled with waste or recyclable material, which may weigh in excess of 1,000 pounds, and maneuver wheeled containers to a pickup stage area.
Residential drivers collect household waste or recyclable material and safely maneuver vehicles in residential environments. Roll‑off drivers prepare, load, and transport large mobile open‑top and compactor containers from customer locations, navigating driveways, alleyways, high‑traffic roadways, and tight overhead environments. All drivers must perform highly skilled backing maneuvers to successfully complete their duties.
- Operate vehicle in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT requirements, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of the assigned vehicle and document checks utilizing the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
- Immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Route Manager.
- Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
- Notify Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Notify Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles that are too heavy to service, or potential safety hazards.
- Communicate customer requests to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris.
- Follow route assignments as directed and complete end‑of‑day documentation and check‑out process.
- Perform all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
