Job Description Title - Routing Specialist

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation and Maintenance

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Job Goal:

To support the efficient and safe transportation of students by assisting with school bus routing, driver scheduling, substitute driver coordination, and communication with schools, parents/guardians, and transportation staff.

Job Summary:

This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, computer proficiency, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will also obtain school bus driver certification within six months of hire and may drive routes as needed to support transportation operations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A.High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education, training, or experience in school transportation or a related field is preferred.
  • B.Intermediate computer skills, including experience working with spreadsheets and databases.
  • C.Ability to learn and effectively operate multiple software applications and transportation systems.
  • D.Ability to organize information, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • E.Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally by phone and email.
  • F.Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination.
  • G.Ability to obtain and maintain required school bus driver certification within six months of hire.
  • H.Ability and willingness to drive a school bus and assist with routes when necessary.
  • I.Must obtain a criminal history background clearance and meet the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. .
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A.Experience in school transportation.
  • B.Experience working with transportation routing software or student transportation databases.
  • C.Previous experience in a school or public-sector environment.
  • D.Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.
Performance Responsibilities and

Essential Functions:
  • 1.Assist with the development, scheduling, and routing of school buses and students using transportation software to create safe, efficient, and effective bus routes.
  • 2.Coordinate and schedule substitute bus drivers to cover routes when regular drivers are absent or unavailable.
  • 3.Communicate with prospective bus drivers throughout the training and certification process, monitor their progress, and provide updates to supervisors.
  • 4.Respond to calls, questions, and concerns from schools, parents/guardians, and staff regarding bus routes, stop locations, schedules, and estimated stop times.
  • 5.Obtain school bus driver certification within six months of hire and drive assigned routes as needed, particularly during periods of driver shortages.
  • 6.Maintain accurate records and information related to routes, drivers, training, and transportation operations.
  • 7.Operate multiple computer software systems and databases as required to perform job duties.
  • 8.Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
  • 9.Follow safety precautions of the specific trades and practice standard safety procedures at all time.
  • 10.Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • 11.Engages in personal professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  • 12.Engages in required orientations, trainings, safety instruction, and meetings as required for effective job performance and/or advancement.
  • 13.Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
