Streets​/Sewer​/Water Laborer Part-Time

Position Purpose

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the part‑time position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Laborer in the Department of Public Services. Under the supervision of the Streets/Sewer/Water Foreman, this entry‑level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure.

• Work includes outdoor physical labor.
• Operation of various types of equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and light construction equipment.
• Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to work projects.
• Patching roads
• Painting fire hydrants
• Placing barricades
• Maintaining vehicles
• Plowing/salting
• Assists other crew personnel as required.
• Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

• Ability to work well with others

• Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent.
• Minimum age of 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.
• Prefer 2–3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium‑duty construction equipment.
• Prefer possession of a State of Michigan commercial driver’s license, group A or B, with tanker endorsement.

• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.).
• Must be able to operate heavy machinery.

• Office space including desk, computer, and phone.
• City provided keys.
• City provided tools.

Salary: $20.96–$26.20 per hour
