Senior Ecologist
Join Arup’s Midlands and West Nature team as a Senior Ecologist on a permanent contract. The position can be based in Birmingham, Bristol or Cardiff.
Responsibilities- Confidently and proactively manage the delivery of ecological input to projects from bidding to delivery, including client meetings, resourcing, budgeting and project control.
- Lead and develop junior ecologists.
- Advise on biodiversity design, restoration, enhancement and the integration of green infrastructure and other nature‑based solutions to secure biodiversity gain and strengthen climate‑change resilience.
- Prepare and review clear, concise reports such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), species survey reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and Habitat Management and Maintenance Plans (HMMPs).
- Manage and conduct field survey work, including Phase 1 Habitat/UKHab surveys, invasive species work and protected species surveys (e.g. great crested newt, bats, badger).
- Analyse survey data and deliver GIS outputs.
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Zoology, Geography, Biology or equivalent; a postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
- Associate or Full membership of CIEEM, or equivalent professional body, working towards chartership.
- Experience designing and carrying out ecological surveys, including EcIA and HR, habitat design, management and monitoring.
- Experience with BNG and related metrics, natural capital studies, site and corporate biodiversity strategies, TNFD, IFC Performance Standard 6 and other nature‑related policies.
- Experience managing sub‑consultants and reviewing performance; working within a planning or environmental/ecological consultancy.
- Valid driving licence (travel may be required).
