The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. Provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA gives age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of residents as per care plans, follows infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use, and assists with basic health‑care needs including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital‑sign monitoring, psychosocial support, and other personal care.
The NA assists residents with transferring, repositioning, walking, performing range‑of‑motion and passive exercises, food preparation and dining, and waters and supplements. The NA aids providers and nursing staff with procedures, documents resident interactions and outcomes, communicates resident changes to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive specimen and vital signs, provides housekeeping, laundry, wellness, and recreational program support, and may participate in departmental or organizational committees.
- High school graduate or GED (preferred but not required).
- Minimum age 16; prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing or state‑certified CNA within four months of starting by enrolling in training or being in the process of obtaining certification through endorsement.
- Annual competency testing and a record of continuing‑education credits (minimum 12 hours) required.
- Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on responsibilities, may qualify as a Sanford Category II driver requiring a motor vehicle report, valid driver’s license, and medical fitness per Sanford Driving Policy as per leader’s request.
