Med/Tele/PCU Registered Nurse
The unit consists of 32 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5, with occasional 5-6 on nights. PCU level care overflow on the unit has a ratio of 1:3. Common diagnoses and types of patients include adults and geriatrics. Patients may present with cardiac catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, pacemaker management, and alcohol-related conditions. Additional cases include COVID-19 patients on Bipap, general surgical patients with a cardiac history, and medical patients with a history of pneumonia, COVID-19, acute on chronic conditions, influenza, and sepsis.
Tele/cardiac Registered Nurse experience is desired, along with PCU experience. Epic system experience is preferred, open to first-time travelers. Registered Nurses are required to titrate drips. Common titratable and set rate drips include Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitro, Nipride, Lasix, and low-dose Dopamine. Levophed is not utilized. A Charge Nurse is present on each shift and may take an assignment of 2-3 patients if needed.
There are nurse aides/patient care techs in this unit with a goal ratio of 1:10. Registered Nurses use RT equipment such as Bipap, trachs, and airvo but are primarily responsible for troubleshooting. Tele/Monitor Techs are available on the unit. Registered Nurses read and interpret cardiac strips. Shifts are scheduled from 7 am to 7 pm and 7 pm to 7 am.
Rotating shifts occur no more than once a week, based on unit needs. Weekend requirements involve working every other weekend, with holiday requirements also being every other. Floating is expected to all areas as helping hands, including PCU for full patient loads, medical-surgical for full assignments, and some emergency room holds or boarding. Any color scrubs are acceptable. Unit-specific orientation lasts for two shifts, with 12-hour shifts on the first week.
The focus is predominantly on telemetry and cardiac care. Additional note:
Candidates may not be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related facilities. Requests for time off should be provided upfront, with a limit of seven or fewer days for a 13-week contract. Cancellation policy limits shifts for completion. Charting is done using the EPIC system. A BSN is not required. The care setting is acute. This is a trauma level 2 facility.
