RN - Psych

Profession: RN (Registered Nurse)

Specialty: Psych RN

Duration: 13 weeks

Shift: 12H Days every other week

Hours per Shift: 12 hours per week

Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience

License: Valid RN license required

Certifications: BLS, CPI (preferred)

Must-Have:

Experience in acute/inpatient or state hospital settings

Good de-escalation and strong communication skills

Willingness to work with adolescents

Description:

The unit has a total of 25 licensed beds, consisting of adult and adolescent patients.

Currently utilizing 3 adult beds and 6 adolescent beds.

Nurse-to-patient ratios are 3:1 for adults and 6:1 for adolescents.

Common patient populations include adolescents and adults with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Additional diagnoses may include psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other behavioral or personality disorders.

Experience with intravenous access is rare; travelers are not required to have this experience.

There is a charge nurse or house supervisor present on some shifts, but travelers are not usually expected to take on charge roles.

Mechanical restraints and seclusion are used rarely.

Mental health technicians/ aides support nurses, with a ratio of 2 for a full unit of 9 patients.

Occupational therapy and social work services are available during the week.

Respiratory therapy is on-site and available to assist as needed.

Telemetry or monitor technicians are not present; RNs are not required to read strips.

Self-scheduling is based on seniority, accommodating block scheduling when possible.

Every other weekend and holiday work is required.

Floating throughout the hospital may be necessary.

There is a dress code of business casual attire, excluding maroon colors.

The unit is a locked inpatient unit, equipped with emergency buttons and security support.

Nurses are expected to engage actively in patient care, including conducting 15-minute rounds.

Key attributes for success include patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

All candidates must meet specific radius criteria and cannot maintain conflicting employment with related facilities.

Requests for time off must be submitted upfront and additional requests will not be approved.

Charting is done using the EPIC system.

A BSN is not required for this position.

This is an acute care setting with a trauma level of 2.
