Ulteig is seeking a Cultural Resource Technician to participate in fieldwork and reporting for compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for public and private clients across our Lifeline Sectors:
Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we provide services for. This position will be overseen in the field and office by the Crew Chief and Cultural Resource Principal Investigator (PI). Our goal is to assist clients with developing an approach to cultural resources and State, Federal, and Tribal compliance, and due diligence that balances development with cultural resources protection.
Candidate will have flexibility to be based in our office in Bismarck, North Dakota, and/or remotely in western North Dakota, and is expected to frequently travel for fieldwork within the region. This is expected to be a seasonal position.
The Cultural Resource Technician will assist in file searches, fieldwork, monitoring, lab work, and/or documentation as assigned. Work will be completed under the supervision of the Crew Chief and PI, with the purpose of completing the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 process or related due diligence efforts. Experience with inventory, testing, excavation, and construction monitoring will be useful to complete the tasks assigned.
This team member will have minimal contact with regulatory agencies, tribes, and/or clients.
- Participate in and complete literature reviews, field inventories, testing, monitoring, and mitigation, under the supervision of the Crew Chief and PI, in support of projects for various industries and markets
- Assist in writing site forms and small project survey reports as assigned, with direct oversight by the Crew Chief and PI
- Communicate project archaeological results to the project team as requested
- Assist with Tribal Traditional Cultural Specialists in the field
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management, geography, or related field with minimal field experience, or
- Some advanced education with some field experience, or
- No advanced education with 2-5 years of archaeological field experience
- Basic understanding of NHPA and Tribal involvement in the Section 106 process
- Working knowledge of using Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup; trailering and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) operation experience is a plus
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to walk at least 5 miles per day in rough terrain and at least 10 miles per day in flat terrain
- Must be capable of using shovels, operating screens, and other equipment associated with testing in the field
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Must be willing to travel frequently for fieldwork with overnight stays
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.
