Heavy Equipment Operator​/Groundsman

Location: Bismarck, ND

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30-$35 per hour DOE

Schedule: Monday-Friday | Some Saturdays | Overtime Available

Kaelberer Construction is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator / Groundsman to join our underground utility and sitework team. This position combines heavy equipment operation with hands‑on field work supporting excavation, grading, water/sewer installation, and site preparation projects.

Candidates should be comfortable working both in equipment and on the ground as project needs require.

• Operate excavators, skid steers, pay loaders, and related equipment safely
• Assist with excavation, grading, trenching, and back filling operations
• Install water, sewer, and storm utility systems
• Read site plans, elevations, and underground utility specifications
• Set and verify grade using lasers and transit levels
• Utilize trench boxes and compaction equipment properly
• Load, move, and manage materials delivered to job sites
• Support crews with general labor and groundwork tasks as needed
• Maintain safe and organized job sites

• Minimum 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience
• Construction or underground utility experience preferred
• Experience with water and sewer installation helpful but willing to train
• Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to safely use hand tools and construction equipment
