Salary Range: $4,337 – $5,354 per month

Job Overview

As a Mechanic, you will repair vehicles and equipment to keep them ready for use. You will diagnose and repair fleet trucks and DOT equipment, installing components such as radios, safety lighting, sirens, and more.

Responsibilities
  • Automobile Repair – troubleshoot and repair systems on cars and pickups, including computerized automotive systems, electrical, transmission, differentials, drive lines, clutches, heating and air conditioning, carburetors and fuel injection systems, brakes and antilock systems, tires, windshields, computerized air‑bag system, and body computers.
  • Radio Installation and Accessories – install 2‑way radios, design wiring schematics for electrical accessories, roof antennas, safety equipment, prisoner cages, red lights on law‑enforcement vehicles, emblems, decals, stripes, switches for Game and Fish enforcement vehicles, mobile vision cameras, and mobile data computers.
  • Light and Heavy Truck Repair – troubleshoot and repair single and tandem axle trucks; brakes, hydraulics, clutches, drive lines, electrical, gas and diesel engines, tune‑ups, transmission repairs, windshields, electronic shift automatic transmission, electronic instrument cluster, computerized diesel engines with laptop diagnostics, electronic or hydraulic systems, and antilock brake systems.
  • Heavy Equipment, Tractors & Minor Equipment Repair – test, replace, or rebuild cooling, electrical, steering systems, brakes, gearboxes, clutches, hydraulics, transmissions, engine repair gas and diesel, differentials, hydrostatic drive transmission, antilock and air brake trailers, and electronic instrument cluster.
  • Shop Maintenance and Record‑Keeping – maintain tools and shop area, fill out time sheets accurately, use Fleet Focus system, check and report accident hazards.
Qualifications
  • Mechanic III:
    Class B Driver License, completion of a two‑year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology, and two years of equivalent experience.
  • Mechanic III – alternative: completion of a three‑year master technology program plus one year of equivalent experience.
  • Mechanic II:
    Class A permit by first day of employment, completion of a two‑year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology. Twelve months to obtain a Class A driver’s license with air brakes and cargo‑tank endorsement.
  • Mechanic I:
    High school diploma or GED and a valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Work experience performing duties similar may substitute for educational requirements on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) such as Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (91B) or Mission Generation Vehicular Equipment Maintenance (2T3X1) may substitute for required work experience.
  • Must provide required tools on date of hire; up to $2,000 per fiscal year allowed for tools.
  • Position may require work after hours, on weekends, and holidays during emergencies; ability to function around vehicular and maintenance traffic.
  • Requires welding knowledge; may be required to plow snow.
Benefits

Salary range: $4,337 – $5,354 per month, depending on level.
