Salary: $25 per hour

Summary of Work

Provide legislative tour guide services to school groups, legislators, and other interested groups and perform other duties as directed during the regular legislative session. Hours are approximately 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday January through April of odd-numbered years. Training, preparation, and scheduling begin in December of even-numbered years. Hours are flexible and as needed during this time. This position is part of the Legislative Council staff and is a temporary position not eligible for benefits.

Basic Functions

Contact and coordinate with high school principals and other teachers to arrange for tours by junior and senior students during the legislative session. The tours are intended to acquaint students with the legislative process. Tours include an overview of legislative process, legislative procedure, and House and Senate chambers, committee rooms, and other Capitol areas. Individuals must perform business processing functions, including preparation, modification, retrieval, storage, and distribution of emails, correspondence, and scheduling using Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and must be able to follow the provided tour guide curriculum and answer questions.

Expectations, Abilities, and Knowledge

Individuals must have an interest in providing knowledge to students with the ability to:

  • Demonstrate dependability and be punctual;
  • Remain objective, nonpartisan, and professional regarding all legislative matters;
  • Work independently and conduct tours with tact and affability;
  • Explain the legislative process;
  • Be familiar with the legislative website and provide relevant information; and
  • Provide suggestions to improve the legislative tour process.

Knowledge in the following is preferred, but we will train:

  • Basic government and legislative processes;
  • Legislative space, including the House and Senate chambers, committee hearing rooms, and Memorial Hall; and
  • Legislative documents, including standing committee schedules, daily calendars, journals, Session Laws, and North Dakota Century Code.
