This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of city roads and streets.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in a variety of snow and ice removal operations, on call 24/7 during winter months, operating 12 hour shifts 7 days a week during snow and ice fighting operations.
  • Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, motor grader, and other heavy equipment.
  • Makes asphalt street repairs with paver, roller, durapatcher, hotbox and cold mix patch; seals cracks.
  • Operates brine making equipment.
  • Operates a street sweeper to clean city streets.
  • Installs traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Operates tractor and bush hog to maintain rights‑of‑way.
  • Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections.
  • Sets up and assists in traffic control at work sites.
  • Performs related duties.
Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsement issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, obtained within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and right‑of‑way maintenance.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment and the computerized controls/devices in the equipment.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
