Position Summary
The HVAC Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of all district HVAC, geothermal (GEO), building automation, and related mechanical systems throughout Bixby Public Schools. This position ensures a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient learning environment for students, staff, and visitors while supporting district-wide facility operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
HVAC Systems
- Inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair commercial HVAC equipment including:
- Rooftop units
- Split systems
- Package units
- Boilers
- Air handlers
- Exhaust and supply fans
- Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment according to established schedules.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and digital HVAC control systems.
- Monitor and adjust building temperatures and ventilation systems to maintain occupant comfort.
- Respond to HVAC service requests and emergency calls in a timely manner.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain district geothermal heating and cooling systems.
- Diagnose and repair geothermal heat pumps, loop systems, circulation pumps, valves, and associated controls.
- Monitor geothermal system performance and identify opportunities for increased efficiency.
- Coordinate repairs and specialized maintenance with outside vendors when necessary.
- Monitor and manage district Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Program schedules, setpoints, and occupancy controls for HVAC and geothermal systems.
- Troubleshoot communication issues between controllers and field devices.
- Assist with energy management initiatives and utility conservation efforts.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and equipment performance.
- Assist with planning and executing HVAC-related capital improvement projects.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and district standards.
- Maintain inventory of HVAC parts, tools, and supplies.
- Assist other maintenance personnel with facility repairs as needed.
- Follow all district safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain safe work practices when working with electrical, mechanical, refrigerant, and geothermal systems.
- Properly handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations.
- Participate in required safety and professional development training.
- Thorough knowledge of commercial HVAC systems and controls.
- Knowledge of geothermal heating and cooling systems.
- Understanding of building automation systems and energy management principles.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting and controls.
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple work orders and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and customer service skills.
- Proficiency with computers, mobile devices, and maintenance management software.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum three (3) years of commercial HVAC experience preferred.
- Experience with geothermal systems preferred.
- Valid Oklahoma driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- EPA Section 608 Certification required.
- Ability to successfully pass required background checks.
- HVAC Journeyman License.
- Experience with Trane, Carrier, Daikin, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, or similar commercial systems.
- Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Experience working in K-12 educational facilities.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- Climb ladders, work on rooftops, and access mechanical spaces.
- Work in varying weather conditions and temperature extremes.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies when required.
The HVAC Technician works in school buildings, mechanical rooms, rooftops, construction areas, and outdoor environments. Work may involve exposure to electrical equipment, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, refrigerants, noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
