EQUANS is looking for a Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer working on behalf of Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. This is a permanent full‑time role (40 hours per week) offering a competitive salary and benefits package.

General Overview
  • Conduct proactive maintenance, repair and inspection of mechanical building services in accordance with standards, operations procedures, legislation and guidance.
  • Represent the organization respectfully and professionally.
  • Take responsibility for all regulatory and HTM‑specific maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on mechanical, HVAC‑specific assets and associated building services following the PPM programme and personal competence and training.
  • Respond promptly to ad‑hoc breakdown requests from supervisors or managers, or as required by site contract.
  • Assist with installation work for minor upgrades and adaptations.
  • Carry out systematic fault‑finding logically and safely on malfunctioning equipment.
  • Adhere to safe working practices within statutory and company guidelines.
  • Operate all types of access equipment, hand and power tools safely, following health & safety and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Use personal protective equipment and follow health & safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain records in written or electronic format as required.
  • Work flexibly with other trades and colleagues.
  • Participate in the call‑out/standby rota after the qualifying period.
  • Liaise with wards and departments to minimise disruption during work.
  • Undergo training to acquire additional skills and maintain service requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments on‑site as instructed by supervisors or managers.
  • Collaborate and cooperate with partners and colleagues to deliver a customer‑focused service.
  • Use initiative to make appropriate decisions, including when working out of hours.
  • Complete all required job cards and paperwork to the required standard.
  • Finish work within allocated time frames.
  • Perform any other tasks commensurate with the role.
Additional Skills
  • Technical advice and problem solving on water systems and heating issues.
  • Experience with other mechanical bias systems.

Impact – The maintenance engineer performs planned preventive and reactive maintenance across the healthcare estate, ensuring statutory and contractual obligations are met while delivering excellent service to customers. The role contributes to the effective operation of the estate and associated engineering systems, extending the lifecycle of vital equipment.

Complexity – Duties are performed by a trained and competent professional, supported by an on‑site estates management team that can provide specialist technical advice and liaise with management for specialist isolations when required.

Qualifications or Required Experience
  • Completed a recognised mechanical apprenticeship.
  • Prior experience within a complex maintenance environment.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Services or equivalent.
  • Experience working on or with AHUs, chilled and portable water systems, A/C units, etc.
  • Pipe‑fitting experience (desirable).
  • Experience with PPM, reactive work and supported project work.
  • Authorised Person Ventilation.
