Job Description
The Career Advisor for Health Professions Advising (HPA) at Virginia Tech serves on the Health Professions Advising team in Career and Professional Development. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Health Professions Advising, the person in this role contributes to developing and providing a broad range of services to support over 2,500 undergraduates and alumni preparing for careers in the health professions and pursuing professional school admission in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical laboratory science and veterinary medicine.
The career advisor provides advising, programs, presentations, teaching, resources and events to assist students towards meeting their goals; and participates in Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) interviews. Some evening and weekend work required.
- Provide one‑on‑one advising (in person and virtually) to students and recent alumni on topics such as choosing a health career direction, selecting an academic major, developing a plan to become a competitive applicant for a graduate health profession program, developing effective interviewing skills, writing effective application materials, and researching graduate health profession schools/programs.
- Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and programs on topics listed above.
- Lead and/or assist with planning of student programs/events throughout the academic year.
- Participate as a member of the Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) in interviewing students which results in their committee letter.
- Lead and/or serve on task groups and assist with other initiatives as appropriate.
- Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, life sciences, health sciences, higher education, counseling, or related field.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication and ability to work effectively with diverse populations and/or professionals from a wide variety of disciplines, and related external organizations.
- Demonstrated understanding of professional skills necessary to succeed in the health professions school admissions interview process.
- Demonstrated excellent written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Master's degree in biological sciences, life sciences, health sciences, higher education, counseling, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience with academic and/or career advising/coaching.
- Familiarity with health‑related fields as well as knowledge of trends in medical/health professional school admissions.
- Knowledge of and experience applying appropriate developmental and advising theories and approaches.
- Previous experience advising/educating/mentoring adolescents and/or young adults.
