Job Description
Under the direction of the Head of the Art & Architecture Library, the Public Services Specialist provides support for user services and outreach within the Art & Architecture Library at Virginia Tech. Areas of focus include collection maintenance and promotion, circulation, and reference support. Responsibilities include assisting at the circulation desk, maintaining organization of library stacks, overseeing daily implementation of the technology lending program, and assisting with collection promotion through displays and events.
This position may also help maintain the unique collections held by the Art & Architecture Library related to the topic of architecture and design including assistance with cataloging, condition reporting, digitization, and promotion under the supervision of the Head of the Art & Architecture Library.
- Experience working in a public service capacity in a highly visible environment
- Experience using library resources (books, periodicals, reserves, etc.) and services (circulation, reference, interlibrary loan, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team environment
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and/or project management experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience using Google and Microsoft-based computer environments
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting issues with computers, tablets, printers, etc.
- Experience promoting and facilitating outreach programs
- Experience working with Alma or other integrated library systems
- Knowledge of a research library environment and/or art, architecture, or design related disciplines
- Familiarity with metadata or descriptive standards for art collections

Additional InformationWork Schedule:
An average of 20-30 hours/week during library operating hours (M-Th, 9am-9pm; F, 9am-6pm; Su, 2-9pm, closed Saturdays). Exact schedule to be determined by employee and supervisor.
Scheduled hours during evenings, weekends, and school breaks are possible.
Ability to independently, frequently, and safely move and handle books weighing up to 10 pounds; occasionally able to lift up to 50 pounds.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
