Job Description

Applications are invited for the position of Undergraduate Academic Advisor in the College of Science at Virginia Tech. This is a full-time, administrative and professional faculty, calendar-year position.

The successful candidate will serve in the Statistics Department within the College of Science. The advisor will play a vital role in supporting student success through comprehensive academic guidance and student-centered engagement. This position is primarily onsite, with an expectation of regular in-person engagement.

Primary responsibilities include providing one-on-one advising; maintaining clear, consistent, and accurate communication with students; and ensuring the confidential and precise management of student records. The advisor will primarily work with majors, offering guidance on course selection and registration, developing individualized plans of study, monitoring academic progress toward graduation, and completing graduation clearance processes. The position also involves interpreting and communicating university and college policies and procedures, engaging in electronic communication with students, and supporting students who are not making satisfactory academic progress by identifying challenges and developing targeted remediation plans.

The selected candidate will be expected to participate in cross-training to support other undergraduate programs within the College of Science and may occasionally assist other departments with advising needs as they arise. Opportunities to contribute to First-Year Experience courses may also be available.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong academic advising expertise or ability and a student-centered approach, with the ability to guide students effectively in course selection, degree planning, and understanding university policies. They will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, maintain high standards of accuracy and confidentiality in student records, and demonstrate strong attention to detail. Success in this role requires effective problem-solving, sound judgment, and the ability to support students in overcoming academic challenges.

The candidate should be highly organized, adaptable, and able to collaborate across programs, with a demonstrated commitment to fostering a supportive and welcoming learning community.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and advising experience.

* Excellent communication, organizational, time management, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

* Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet established deadlines.

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace equivalents (Docs, Sheets, Gmail).

* Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, university, and departmental guidelines.

* Proven ability to effectively engage with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in student development, counseling, education, or a related field.

* Experience working within an academic unit, including roles in academic advising, student services, recruitment, and/or curriculum processes.

Salary begins at $53,000 and is commensurate with relevant experience.
