Job DescriptionMontgomery County Public Schools in Virginia are accepting applications for a secondary Special Education Paraprofessional position at Blacksburg High School for the school year.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The paraprofessional, under the supervision of a special education teacher, supports students with disabilities ages 3 through 21 to access the general or adapted curriculum in various settings to increase independence and meet educational, social, emotional, and functional needs. The paraprofessional may work with one or more students during the school day, maintaining the dignity, safety, and supervision of students while promoting independence.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must have a minimum of 48 completed college credits OR successfully completed Parapro Assessment. Individuals who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered. Parapro assessment can be completed with MCPS by appointment.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
The following duties are typical for a paraprofessional position. There may be extra duties not listed that relate to the role. This description is not all-inclusive and may be revised by administration.
- Assists teachers in preparing instructional materials/activities to support instruction for students with disabilities
- Provides accommodations and modifications as written in the student’s Individualized Education Program
- Reinforces material, prepares and maintains files/reports, and assists with data collection
- Supports individual and small-group instruction to adapt curriculum to student needs
- Assists in maintaining behavior standards and implementing teacher-created plans
- Contributes to a learning environment conducive to student development
- Supports students with individualized or small-group needs, including behavioral and, when appropriate, physical support
- Assists with classroom maintenance such as cleaning surfaces and organizing supplies as needed
- Instructs students on the use of technology or augmentative communication devices
- Provides supervision and assists students as needed; checks work for adherence to instructions and offers feedback
- Assists with content-area skills (math, reading, writing, spelling, history, etc.), including reading aloud when necessary
- Demonstrates confidentiality in maintaining student records and helps maintain classroom order
- Monitors students to stay on tasks as per classroom behavior plans
- Performs other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is light work with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds, occasional medium work, and the potential for standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, and repetitive motions. Ability to assist with daily living needs and, in some classrooms, medical/self-care tasks may be required. Training may be provided to lift/transfer students as needed.

Work EnvironmentWork is primarily in a classroom setting with potential exposure to illnesses. Responsibilities include classroom management, small-group and one-on-one instruction, multiple activities, and transitions. Some outdoor transitions may occur during field trips.
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
SALARY: $26,077.50 - $45,727.05 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience
