Job Description

Reporting to the Instrumentation/Electrical Supervisor, the Electronic Technician Senior performs advanced duties in the Power Plant related to the maintenance and installation of instrumentation & electrical equipment. Serves as a resource to the other I/E department team members for complex equipment issues and failures. Demonstrates expertise in the calibration and maintenance of distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, continuous emission monitoring systems, and predictive emissions monitoring systems, and ensures they are completed within the required schedule.

Ensures that corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance for electrical and instrumentation equipment on all boilers, turbine generator, pumps, ash removal, pollution control equipment, and all other auxiliary equipment are completed in a timely manner to achieve optimum plant efficiency. Provides guidance and demonstrated experience and skills in troubleshooting complex instrumentation, control and electrical circuits. Identifies and implements opportunities to improve Power Plant control systems.

Ensures performance of duties in a timely manner and in compliance with federal and state law, university policies and procedures, and any associated regulation and guidelines. Performs responsibilities ranging from advanced levels in support of specialty activities. Provides leadership, and guidance to staff where required. Provides direction and support to the I/E technician and electrician in the absence of supervision.

Oversees the work of fellow I/E department employees at times to ensure quality and efficiency of work. Coordinates the work of contractors as required. Coordinates the work of I/E employees with plant operations for proper equipment shutdown and lockout-tagout.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in the maintenance and installation of complex industrial controls and instrumentation including the ability to troubleshoot all types of control systems and electrical interlocking systems.
  • Ability to provide directions to others in the event of the absence of supervision.
  • Strong decision‐making skills to maintain optimum plant safety and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and maintaining Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems and Predictive Emission Monitoring Systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex systems and equipment without supervision or oversight.
  • Ability to use advanced electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team through all phases of a project from initial design, through the final inspection.
  • Ability to train fellow employees on all aspects of the Instrumentation/Electronic Department procedures.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and complete assignments independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand electrical blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions to this particular skill.
  • American Society of Power Engineers (or equivalent), PO1 license or higher.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Power Plant experience.
  • DCS and PLC configuration and troubleshooting experience.
  • ASOPE Power Plant First Class License or higher.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to keep accurate records.
  • Build and maintain spreadsheets and reports for accurate record‑keeping utilizing Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
