Job Description

The Chemistry Department Research Stockroom is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented individual to assist the Stockroom Supervisor with daily stockroom operations.

Duties include receiving and distributing packages and supplies, maintaining inventory records, assisting with ordering and stocking materials, and supporting faculty, staff, and students with stockroom-related needs.

The successful candidate will be organized; able to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment; able to communicate effectively; committed to providing excellent customer service to faculty, staff, and students.

This is a regular 32-hour-per-week benefited position with a primarily daytime weekday schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Receiving and distributing packages and supplies.
  • Maintaining inventory records.
  • Assisting with ordering and stocking materials.
  • Supporting faculty, staff, and students with stockroom-related needs.
  • Safety: lifting, moving, transporting stockroom materials and packages.
  • Communication and customer service to faculty, staff, and students.
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately maintain records and perform routine mathematical calculations.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn university systems and software.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write legibly, weigh, and measure.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and transport stockroom materials and packages.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications are not required; candidates who meet the required qualifications are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Education, training, or coursework in chemistry or laboratory sciences.
  • Knowledge of chemical storage, handling, and laboratory safety practices.
  • Experience with inventory management, shipping/receiving, stockroom, warehouse, retail, or laboratory support operations.
  • Experience maintaining inventory records, spreadsheets, requisitions, invoices, or shipping logs.
  • Experience loading, unloading, and transporting materials in a safe manner.
  • Familiarity with Hokie Mart or similar purchasing/inventory systems.
  • Experience operating equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
Compensation and Benefits

Pay Band: 3

Salary: $24,500 - $30,000 (commensurate with experience)

Schedule:

32 hours per week, mainly daytime weekdays.

Overtime status:
Non-Exempt, eligible for overtime.

Appointment Type:
Regular.

Review Date: 6/17/2026.

Additional Information

Successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
