Job Description

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks a Facilities Project Manager (Operations & Maintenance) to lead and coordinate facilities operations and minor construction projects supporting the Office of College Facilities. The role manages a complex portfolio of more than 2 million square feet, including over 500 campus buildings, eleven Agricultural Research and Extension Centers (ARECs), and extension sites statewide.

This executive‑level position operates independently, overseeing multiple concurrent projects and serving as the primary point of contact for project execution. It requires strong technical construction expertise, administrative proficiency, and project‑coordination skills. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and field experience is required.

Regular travel (approximately 20–40% of the time) to AREC locations is required to provide on‑site technical assessment and oversight. The position is primarily based in Blacksburg but may accommodate alternative college‑operated sites in central or eastern Virginia, subject to supervisory approval.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning, coordinating, and supervising minor construction projects and facility maintenance across the college’s geographically dispersed portfolio.
  • Interpreting design and construction documents and administering contracts in accordance with building codes and industry standards.
  • Maintaining project schedules, budgets, and documentation, and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Communicating regularly with AREC directors, superintendents, farm staff, contractors, and university partners.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations, including OSHA 10 or 30‑hour certification if applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, facility management, or a related field, or equivalent training and field experience.
  • Ability to interpret design/construction documents and administer contracts effectively.
  • Knowledge of building codes, construction methods, and facility systems.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and records‑management skills.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam or similar digital plan review and markup tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education or research facility environments.
  • Agricultural facility or operational expertise.
  • Knowledge of building systems and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Experience working in geographically dispersed settings.
  • OSHA 10 or 30‑hour certificate in general industry or construction.
Additional Information
  • Must wear safety/PPE equipment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Position requires flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, and on‑call availability for critical needs.
  • Candidate will be required to undergo a criminal conviction check.
