Police Officer
The Public Safety Division at Virginia Tech is comprised of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, and the Office of Emergency Management. It supports the well‑being of our community through planning, responding to emergency events, and fostering a culture of preparedness.
Responsibilities- Investigate motor vehicle accidents, personal injuries, and criminal matters.
- Enforce state and federal laws and University policies.
- Prepare investigative reports and provide courtroom testimony.
- Provide traffic direction and crowd control during events.
- Respond to emergency situations and conduct extended foot patrols.
- Work a rotating shift schedule that includes weekends, nights, and holidays, and report for duty during adverse weather conditions or when the university is closed.
- Adhere to all criteria established for a nationally accredited police department.
- Perform additional duties as requested by supervisor and maintain a positive work environment.
- Experience writing reports or similar documents.
- Experience interacting with the public.
- Demonstrated computer proficiency.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse department and community.
- Ability to provide credible court testimony and comprehend legal documents.
- Use independent judgment and exhibit restraint in stressful situations.
- Operate a motor vehicle at high speeds in adverse conditions.
- Gather facts through personal contact, observation, and record examination.
- React quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Recognize safety and security hazards on campus and take corrective action.
- Perform strenuous physical activities.
- Run, jump, climb stairs, bend, lift, and restrain individuals as needed.
- Work on bicycle, vehicle, or foot.
- Pass a physical abilities test by running 1.5 miles within 20 minutes.
- Use a respirator when required.
- Pass a medical exam, including vision testing, after a conditional offer.
- Complete a comprehensive background check and credit history check, including driving records, criminal history (with fingerprinting), and a pre‑employment drug screening.
- Subject to random, reasonable‑suspicion, and post‑accident drug and alcohol screening per department policy.
- Successfully complete a psychological assessment.
- U.S. citizen as required by Virginia Code Section 15.2‑1705.
- Qualify under federal and state guidelines to carry a firearm; individuals with a misdemeanor domestic‑violence conviction are prohibited from carrying.
- High school graduate or possess proof of equivalency degree.
- Hold a valid Virginia Operator's License or obtain it within 30 days of employment.
- Meet vision requirements: no worse than 20/200 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20; color blindness is disqualifying.
- Be at least 20 years old on the date of hire.
- Meet all other standards mandated by law and the Criminal Justice Services Board.
- Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification at the time of hire.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police science, or related field.
- Previous military experience.
Base salary of $54,500 with military and educational incentives.
Hours per Week28‑day cycle; 12‑hour shifts; shift schedule varies by assignment.
