Performs semi-skilled work in the general maintenance of transit buses, equipment, and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Mechanic Foreman. Supervision is exercised over assigned staff. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.

Shift: 9:00 pm to 5:30 am, with scheduled days to be determined, may consist of weeknights and weekend nights

* Supervises, assigns duties, and coordinates the workflow of staff and temporary workers working the wash bay to ensure work is completed efficiently and meets established standards

* Provides training to staff for learning their duties and responsibilities, coaching staff when necessary for improvement

* Ensure all staff adhere to safety regulations, wear appropriate PPE, and safely operate equipment

* Responsible for ensuring the wash bay area is properly staffed for each shift, and is responsible for requesting additional help when short-staffed and ensuring Special Events are covered

* Performs evaluations of staff working in the wash bay and maintenance area with assistance from the Mechanic Foreman

* Oversees the washing of vehicle exteriors, cleaning of vehicle interiors, fueling of vehicles, checking and replenishing of all fluid levels of vehicles (coolant, DEF, transmission fluid, engine oil, etc.)

* Ensures bodily fluid spills or other biohazards are properly cleaned, sanitized, and disposed of appropriately to mitigate the transmission of any blood borne pathogens

* Responsible for ensuring the Transit fleet is properly fueled, adequately charged, and fluids are maintained to proper levels to ensure sufficient vehicles are ready for service for the following day

* Notifies transit mechanics of any issues with vehicles or equipment, including leaks, starter issues, charging issues, safety concerns, etc

* Maintains immediate work area and grounds, and performs minor maintenance and repairs to the automated washer and other equipment in the wash bay area

* Maintains and orders supplies as needed, ensuring that all necessary chemicals and supplies are maintained and used in a cost-effective manner.

* Responsible for ensuring the work area is kept clean and tidy, and equipment is properly maintained

* Performs required record-keeping and ensures all forms and records are properly filled out and saved by staff

* Acts as the main point of contact for the wash bay, communicating effectively with leadership and staff in other divisions

* Ensures seasonal detail work is scheduled, performed properly, and documented to ensure all vehicles are included during the time allotted

* Ensures staff follow the policy on collecting and turning in Lost and Found items found on fleet vehicles

* General knowledge of the operation and routine cleaning requirements of transit passenger buses

* General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streets

* General knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and of the use of common hand tools

* Skill in the safe operation of passenger buses and the automated wash facility

* Ability to perform manual labor

* Ability to follow oral and written instructions

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

* Strong communication, conflict resolution, and organization skills

* Ability to motivate and keep morale high

* Ability to problem-solve quickly and develop an effective solution

Education and Experience

* High school diploma or GED

* Supervisory or team leadership preferred

* Three to five years of experience in the maintenance and operation of large automotive equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

* Valid Virginia driver's license with a satisfactory driving record

* Ability to obtain a Commonwealth of Virginia commercial driver's license in the (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement)

* This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended

* A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position

* Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration will be followed during the employment period.

* This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force
